Atrial Septal Defect Medical Breakthrough

ASD or Atrial Septal Defect is a form of birth Defect in the heart or hole in heart. It is more common in girls. There are other types of Septal defects or holes in a heart as well as other heart conditions in children. The incidence is increasing. The reasons why so, we really do not know yet.

Treatments previously were limited to folks traveling abroad to Israel, India etc at great cost to the affected persons, their loved ones and our nation. And this has also led to capital flight. To stem this tide, there has been various disjointed efforts at surgical repairs here in Nigeria at various centres. These typically involved medical missions undertaken by foreign teams.

OAUTHC, like other centres in Lagos, Enugu, Abuja and Jos have been doing these for about 3 years. Working under the tutelage of the US, Pakistan, Israeli and Indian teams, the team at OAUTHC has championed the groundbreaking step of being the first entirely Nigerian professional group to conduct successful open heart surgery in children from diagnosis to full surgical treatment.
